Can I Actually Do Local SEO Myself, or Do I Need to Hire An Agency?

Whether you need a full growth partner, a second opinion on your strategy, or just want to see what an extra $100K in revenue could look like — we’re easy to reach and even easier to work with.

It’s one of the most honest questions a business owner can ask, and it deserves an honest answer: sometimes yes, sometimes no and anyone who tells you “always hire us” without looking at your situation is selling, not advising. We run local SEO for a living, and we still tell a fair share of the people who call us to start on their own. Here’s how to figure out which camp you’re in.

What “Local SEO” Actually Involves

Your Google Business Profile — categories, services, photos, posts, questions, and the steady review engine behind it.

  • On-site local signals — location and service pages, local keywords, internal links, and schema markup so search engines (and AI tools) can parse you cleanly.
  • Citations and consistency — your name, address, and phone matching perfectly across dozens of directories.
  • Reviews and reputation — earning them, replying to them, and turning them into both a ranking signal and a trust asset.

None of it is rocket science. All of it is time, judgment, and consistency — which is exactly where the real question lives.

What You Can Genuinely Do Yourself

Plenty — and you should. If you’re hands-on and willing to spend a few focused hours a week, you can absolutely:

  • Fully complete and optimize your Google Business Profile.
  • Keep your hours, services, and photos current and accurate.
  • Write honest, specific location and service pages in your own voice — often better than an outsider could, because you actually know your customers.
  • Find and fix the obvious information mismatches in an afternoon

Where DIY Usually Stalls

  • Citation cleanup at scale. Finding and correcting your details across fifty-plus directories by hand is slow, tedious, and easy to get wrong.
  • Technical on-site work. Schema, site speed, mobile issues, and internal linking quietly cap your visibility, and they’re not intuitive.
  • Competitive markets. If three rivals have agencies and hundreds of reviews, casual effort won’t close that gap.
  • Diagnosing drops. Knowing whether a dip is a reporting change, an algorithm update, or a suspension takes pattern recognition built across many accounts.
  • Staying consistent. The single biggest reason DIY local SEO fails is simple: it’s the first thing that gets dropped in a busy week.
  • Weekly posting of keyword-rich, engaging content to improve search visibility and audience engagement.
  • Active review management with timely responses to all reviews, including professional handling of negative feedback.

Even categories the ad platforms refuse to serve still appear in organic results, which is precisely why restricted businesses lean on it so heavily. If your customers have questions, search reaches them. That’s a universality no other channel can claim.

The Real Math: Time vs. Money

The question isn’t really “can I do it.” It’s “what is my time worth, and where does it earn the most?” Done properly, local SEO takes something like five to ten focused hours a month once it’s set up — more at the start. If those hours are worth more spent serving customers, closing jobs, or running the business, then outsourcing isn’t an expense; it’s arbitrage. If you currently have more time than budget, DIY is a perfectly smart starting point. Neither answer is wrong they’re just right for different seasons of a business.

A quick example makes it concrete. Say you’re a contractor who bills $150 an hour and spends eight hours a month wrestling with directory listings and review chasing. That’s $1,200 in lost billable time going toward work an agency might handle for a fraction of it while you spend those same hours on jobs that actually pay.

That’s not an argument against doing it yourself; it’s just the math worth running honestly before you decide. For plenty of early-stage owners, the time genuinely is cheaper than the cash. For others, it stopped being cheaper a year ago and they never re-ran the numbers.
