Why ChatGPT Recommends Other Local Businesses When People Ask About Yours

Whether you need a full growth partner, a second opinion on your strategy, or just want to see what an extra $100K in revenue could look like — we’re easy to reach and even easier to work with.

Try it right now. Open ChatGPT or Perplexity and ask, “What’s the best [your category] in [your city]?” If your business isn’t in the answer — but two or three of your competitors are — you’ve just watched a customer get handed to someone else in real time. And it’s happening more than you think: a growing share of people now ask AI tools for local recommendations instead of scrolling Google, and roughly 40% of local-intent queries already trigger an AI summary somewhere in the search experience.

The frustrating part is that this feels like a black box. It isn’t. AI tools choose local recommendations using signals you can actually influence. Here’s how the machine decides — and how to get yourself into the answer.

How AI Tools Build a Local Recommendation

When you ask an AI for the best taco spot or the top plumber in town, it doesn’t invent an answer. It retrieves, ranks, and synthesizes from sources it trusts, then names a short list. For local queries, those sources are remarkably consistent:

  • Your Google Business Profile and map data — categories, reviews, ratings, and the basic facts about who you are and what you do.
  • Review sites and directories — the volume, recency, and sentiment of what people say about you across the web.
  • Community sources like Reddit and local forums — AI tools lean heavily on these because they read as authentic human opinion.
  • Your own website — but only if it’s crawlable and structured clearly enough for a model to pull and trust a specific claim.
  • Trade and local press — earned mentions in publications the model already treats as credible.

Notice what’s not on that list: how good your product actually is. The AI can’t taste your tacos. It can only weigh the signals it can read. If your competitor shows up and you don’t, it’s because their signals are louder and clearer — not because they’re better.

The Real Reasons You’re Not in the Answer

Across the local businesses we audit, the absence almost always comes down to a handful of fixable gaps:

  • You’re invisible where AI looks. A thin Google Business Profile, few reviews, and no presence on Reddit or directories means there’s simply not enough about you for a model to cite.
  • Your reviews are too few or too old. AI weighs review volume, freshness, and sentiment. Fifteen reviews from two years ago lose to a competitor with two hundred recent ones.
  • The AI can’t read your site. If your robots.txt or CDN is blocking the search and user crawlers, you’re not eligible to be cited no matter how good your content is.
  • Your content isn’t structured to be quoted. No clear answers, no headings, no FAQ or local business schema — so even when a model reaches your page, it can’t confidently lift a fact from it.
  • No one credible is talking about you. Few earned mentions in the trusted sources AI leans on means few reasons for it to surface your name.

How to Become the Business AI Recommends

Local AI visibility sits at the intersection of two disciplines you may already know: solid local SEO and getting cited by AI. Do these, roughly in order:

  1. Make your Google Business Profile bulletproof. Claim it, choose the most specific primary category, complete every field, keep hours accurate, and post regularly. It’s a primary source AI reads for local answers
  2. Build steady, recent reviews. Ask every happy customer, make it effortless, and respond to each one. Volume, recency, and sentiment all feed both Google and the AI tools that read Google
  3. Confirm AI can actually crawl you. Check that the search and user crawlers behind ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity aren’t blocked in robots.txt or at your CDN. This is the step most businesses miss entirely
  4. Structure your pages to be cited. Lead with clear answers, use real headings, keep claims specific, and add FAQ and local business schema. Make it easy for a model to quote you accurately.
  5. Earn genuine presence where AI trusts. Real reviews on the platforms that matter in your category, helpful answers in local communities, and the occasional earned mention in local or trade press. You can’t fake this — which is exactly why it works

What This Looks Like in Practice

Picture two coffee shops three blocks apart. One has 280 recent Google reviews, a complete profile with the exact right category, a handful of mentions in local roundups, and a couple of “best coffee in town” threads on Reddit where real customers tagged it. The other has 22 reviews from two years ago, a half-finished profile, and no web presence beyond its own quiet website. Ask any AI tool for the best coffee nearby and it’s obvious which one gets named — not because the coffee is better, but because the signals are. The AI is summarizing the trail of evidence, and one shop left a trail while the other didn’t.

One more nuance worth knowing: AI tools weigh recency. A burst of reviews two years ago matters far less than a steady trickle of fresh ones, and a mention in a current local article counts for more than a stale one. “Set it and forget it” doesn’t hold here — the businesses that stay cited are the ones that keep feeding the signals month after month. Think of it as a habit, not a project.
